PIETRA PhD student Menna Mansi was one of the students who attended the 2023 Corpus Linguistics Summer School in Birmingham. She reflects on this enriching experience: “Birmingham CCRSS23 familiarized me with various corpus linguistics tools and methods that will assist me in examining the data collected for my PhD research. During the virtual summer school, we discussed three main methods in corpus linguistics: quantification, identification of patterns and comparison of linguistic data. The issue of frequency was also debated during the summer school lectures with suggestions to consider relative frequency, i.e. an occurrence of a word should be considered in relation to the size of the text. Moreover, the school included hands-on exercises in preset tools like SketchEngine and WordSmith, as well as tailored programming in R. Overall, the Birmingham CCRSS23 offered a useful outline of a wide range of corpus linguistics tools and their applications to answer research questions from different disciplines.”
