Sameh Hanna is a Global Translation Adviser with United Bible Societies. He previously held a number of academic posts at Universities of Manchester, Salford, University College London and Leeds. He completed his PhD in Translation Studies at University of Manchester with a dissertation on the sociological reading of the Arabic translations of Shakespeare’s tragedies (2006). Immediately after finishing his PhD, he joined University College London (UCL) as an Andrew Mellon postdoctoral fellow in the humanities and then held a lectureship in Arabic and Translation Studies at the University of Salford from 2007.
His research expertise is in the intersection of a few fields, including Arabic literature, translation studies, theatre studies, Shakespeare studies, social history of the Arabic translations of the Bible and the sociology of culture. His study on Bourdieu in Translation Studies: The Socio-cultural Dynamics of Shakespeare Translation in Egypt has been published with Routledge in 2016 and its Arabic translation is forthcoming. He is one of the founding members of the International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies (IATIS).
