Two of our colleagues had a pleasure to participate in “The World in Rome” summer school organized by ENLIGHT, the European University Network, between June 26 and July 7, 2023.

This summer school was developed in the context of the ENLIGHT network, a European University formed by ten comprehensive, research-intensive universities from ten European countries (Belgium, Estonia, France, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland).

Prof. O’Connor mentioned that it was wonderful for to be able to take the student group to S. Giovanni in Laterano and the Irish College to talk about pilgrimage and communication with Dr Katie Tycz @ciaokatet.

Menna, a Doctoral Researcher on the PIETRA team, said that “it was a real pleasure to be part of @‌enlight_eu “The World in Rome” summer school where I had the chance to meet a group of insightful people and find out more about the history of this fantastic city. The experience introduced me to the history of Rome from a lens that focused on intercultural and foreign exchanges. Beside the historical background information, I also learned about different interdisciplinary conceptual and critical frames, such as “otherness” and “labeling.” Furthermore, I had the chance to explore the role of translation in the history of the Catholic Church and to discuss key ideas such as “illusion of standardization,” “translator’s freedom” and “equal communication.” Throughout the summer school’s lectures and excursions, I built fruitful relations with lecturers and colleagues from other universities and disciplines. Discussions and side-talks with all the participants added to my knowledge and understanding of different perceptions and cultures.”
